The 2nd of June marks 50 years since Saint-Nizier church collaborated with sex workers in Lyon, France in 1975 as they occupied the church for over a week demanding an end to the harassment, violence, & criminalisation perpetuated against them. The parish priest, Rev. Antonin Béal, provided shelter to the women & protected them from external attempts to end the occupation for as long as he was able. This protest in Lyon is regarded as a catalyst for the movement for dignity & rights for sex workers in Europe; nevertheless, 50 years later, many of our community members suffer the same stigma & persecution that our colleagues in France endured in the '70s. To highlight our struggles & celebrate 50 years of sex workers organising in self-advocacy, sex worker-led organisations in Europe are planning coordinated actions across the continent in June. For this occasion, Red Umbrella Sweden is putting together an evening of documentaries that give the mic to the sex workers, so we can tell our stories on our own terms. Focusing on movies that center migrants, most of which are produced by sex workers, we aim to show the diversity in our community, as well as the strength and resilience that is so often overlooked by mainstream portrayals. This is our homage to every sex worker, prostitute, whore. Our stance against the systems of state oppression enacted by police and border control, patriarchal violence and puritan morality that affect us all. Les prostituées de Lyon parlent (1975) Documentary, 40 min A few hundred sex workers occupied a church in Lyon in 1975. They are interviewed about their lives. Crossings, Stories of migrant sex workers (2018) Documentary, 39 min Crossings is a sex-worker produced documentary about the effects of criminalisation on migrant sex workers in Europe and the powerful ways of their resistance. The film tells the stories of five people in five European countries (Serbia, Macedonia, France, Spain, and Norway) who come from very diverse backgrounds but have something in common – all of them are migrants who sell sex. Fly in Power (2023) Documentary, 78 min Fly in Power follows Charlotte, a Korean massage worker and core organizer of Red Canary Song (RCS). Through her story, we learn how the incarceration system is pitted against Asian migrant women and their survival. Other RCS members, including Khokhoi, a young body worker, and Professor Elena Shih, Brown University, share powerful insights that debunk the myths of sex trafficking. Fly in Power is a glimpse into the intimate spaces that not only connect these workers, but is also a testament to the global advocacy of women's rights to work and thrive. This is the first film to center the narrative of an Asian massage worker in her own words, with her own agency of storytelling and editing. The intention of Fly in Power is to honor their practices of care, autonomy, and survival and to raise awareness of the oppressive systems that face us all. This film has been produced entirely by women, non-binary, trans and queers of the Asian diaspora. More than half of the production team are former or current sex workers.
