Red Umbrella Sweden, in cooperation and support with ESWA, Ailé House and Hypnos Theatre, is excited to announce two events to honour and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the church protest in Lyons, France. This will be a day for sex workers to be heard and seen and we would love for you to join us! Registration is mandatory for this event. Some of the things to look forward to: * Poledancing: Lapin Rex Lapin Rex describes themselves as: “A newly founded cross-disciplinary performance group and a loyal ally to the sex worker community." * Poetry Reading: Ruby & Leo Sex workers and RUS members Ruby and Leo will read some of their own poetry as well as some selected works honouring the occasion. * Speech: Jazz Sex worker and RUS member Jazz will give a speech about their experiences in the industry. ** Panel talk: I am a sex worker because.. Listen to sex workers from Red Umbrella Sweden talk about the reasons they got into this business, what is keeping them there and more. You do not want to miss this! The 2nd of June marks 50 years since Saint-Nizier church collaborated with sex workers in Lyon, France in 1975 as they occupied the church for over a week demanding an end to the harassment, violence, & criminalisation perpetuated against them. The parish priest, Rev. Antonin Béal, provided shelter to the women & protected them from external attempts to end the occupation for as long as he was able. This protest in Lyon is regarded as a catalyst for the movement for dignity & rights for sex workers in Europe; nevertheless, 50 years later, many of our community members suffer the same stigma & persecution that our colleagues in France endured in the '70s.
