BDSM & Trauma
| I am going to start this entry by saying that this post is written from my very own experience and does not speak for the entire community, it is completely anecdotal. As a neurodivergent with C-PTSD, I have my baggage. And while I have been privileged enough to finally access trauma therapy, after 7 years of being ping ponged around between various clinics and a 2 year wait list. Access to therapy is extremely limited and gatekept, there is absolutely discrimination in who can access it. What has helped me heal is talking and exposure. I want to add a disclaimer that I am not suggesting this is for everybody, everyones journey is different and unique to them. For myself, and several others I have met in this community, BDSM is a form exposure therapy for us. It gives us the safe space to explore in a dynamic, that may be triggering, while retaining full autonomy over our own bodies; taking back control over ourselves and our lives. Without trauma dumping in this post, being a switch nurtures those different aspects of what I have gone through. I have sabotaged previous non-kink romantic relationships in the past, before I realised why this community is important to me. I have parts of me that I had to repress in order to avoid being told I am too much. I can thank my therapist for helping me realise this and better understand myself. This is my safe space where I can be my authentic self, without judgement. I am absolutely not everybodies cup of tea, but it allows me to meet people who I do click with openly and freely. As a Domme, I love the power exchange but the biggest part for me is that it leans into the caring and nurturing aspects of my personality. They give me their submission, I give them the permission to let go. I give them space to surrender, a space to stop thinking, a space where they can be vulnerable, a space to decompress and step away from the demands of everyday life. And to me, that is an incredibly beautiful and rewarding thing to be trusted with. It also gives me a safe space to be able to immerse myself and embrace my personality without being told I am too much, instead, I am appreciated for who I am. As a submissive, I love the role reversal. In my every day life, I have become used to taking charge of everything and I am very much your typical strong headed female. I can take care of myself, but I don't always want to have to. Submitting gives me the space to exercise trust with another person and let them take hold of the reins for a while while I disconnect from my everyday and recharge. As a neurodivergent, I am prone to burnout and sensitive to stress. My version of entering Little space provides me a space I can enter, letting somebody else take control and make decisions. Allowing my mental battery to recharge and giving me time to do things for myself, that I enjoy. I have had an overall poor relationship with trust throughout my life due to my past, the combination of therapy and submission has helped me learn to be able to trust people again, and not just within this community; but also in my everyday life. Submission has also helped me learn to set boundaries, and no longer allowing people to treat me poorly and walk all over me like a doormat. BDSM is not just about sexual gratification, for some of us, it is about healing and nurturing certain parts of us. 🖤 |
