The movie never ends.
| Im not afraid. Im suspended in the feeling of fear. Every 4 years we go to the polls and every time I find myself in this half state of fear, anticipation and hope. It is almost paradoxical. I feel the same way when im rewatching a scary movie for the third or fourth time. I know the general motions of the story. The kids go to the cabin; they have talked about the scary monster and are doing their part in holding it at bay. Placing their ballots, the monster is released and the final girl survives. Yet every four years, right before the monster is released and the girl leaves the movie abruptly ends, and a new group of kids go to the cabin. But we the viewers never get the release of the final girl surviving. We are still scared of the monster, of being attacked, stabbed and killed. We don’t get to relax because judgement is always delayed another four years. Suspense requires uncertainty but fear requires something else. When political parties use human characteristics to score political points. When religious immigrants voting is fielded as a scary possibility, when transpeople are brought up in a debate on criminality that’s when salience brings fear into focus. For me that fear is fascism. But after a few rotations of this process, you would start to feel emotionally tired. The fear is always there but it becomes benign. The ballots are brought forth and you feel apathetic. And then they say that you should feel gratitude for the position that you are in. As if being tired, afraid and apathetic is ingratitude. Every four years we watch the same movie. The kids stand in the cabin, cast their votes and we wait for the monster. And every four years the monster stays in that room and tells us “it’s the other” while the girl stays suspended in fear. - Sarah Otterbeck |
