| In February 1966, a 19-year-old Terence McKenna was sitting in a house in Berkeley when someone handed him a glass pipe containing something that looked like orange mothballs. “What is it?” “DMT.” “How long does it last?” “Ten minutes.” McKenna took it. Within seconds, the world he thought he understood disappeared. He described falling into an intensely geometric realm populated by bizarre entities he would later famously call “self-transforming machine elves” - apparently intelligent beings communicating through a kind of visible, coloured language. Whatever happened that evening, McKenna never really got over it. According to cultural anthropologist Graham St John, author of Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna, McKenna entered the experience broadly materialist. He emerged convinced that our normal model of reality was radically incomplete. That ten-minute experience became one of the organizing events of his life. McKenna didn't simply conclude that DMT caused extraordinary hallucinations. He believed it demonstrated that reality could present itself in forms the ordinary human mind couldn't even conceive. “There is a secret, and this is it,” he later said. The secret was that “the world is a way that you can’t think it is.” DMT became a philosophical tool for McKenna, what he eventually called the “ultimate deconditioning agent.” He believed culture gives us categories through which we interpret everything: real and imaginary, self and other, possible and impossible. DMT seemed capable of obliterating those categories within seconds. As he later put it: “Your constructs are not a bridge to reality, they’re a boundary against reality.” McKenna spent the following three decades spreading that message. Through lectures, workshops, tapes and eventually the early internet, he helped transform DMT from an obscure underground psychedelic into one of the great mysteries of modern psychedelic culture. He also became fascinated by the discovery that DMT occurs naturally in mammalian biology, speculating about what purpose an endogenous psychedelic might serve. Those discussions eventually contributed to the popular theory that the pineal gland releases DMT during birth, death or near-death experiences> Nearly sixty years after McKenna's first encounter, science can explain much more about DMT's receptors and effects on the brain. But his biggest question remains open. Why does altering brain chemistry with one tiny molecule produce an experience so profoundly alien that some people return questioning what reality actually is? McKenna never proved his answers. But he made the question impossible to ignore. |
