ItalianoBlade” (1998) As Subconscious Kink Awakening
| Going to a movie club today for Kinksters, and it reminded me of a movie from my early teen years: the original “Blade”-movie from 1998. This is a favorite of a many 90s Kid, however this entry isn’t a gush review of the whole film, just a personal look at a certain scene near the end of the movies big fight. Before you continue, I will be blunt; there is spoilers. ‼️ I must have been either 14 or 15 when I saw “Blade” for the first time, a movie introduced by my dad – I was still then semi-shocked by the word “fuck” at that age and giggled at the villains constant use of the word (when I watched the movie again in my late 20s, I was disappointed since the swearing seemed much tamer then I remembered). I was just starting to develop an interest in sex, curiously seeking out adult books at libraries and my parents book shelf. Sex scenes confused me in movies, since I was fascinated, but also shy. I also had developed an interest in my mind towards spanking, but that would take another 5 years to accept… Anyway! “Blade” was a pretty tame, vanilla movie for all it’s purposes even at age 14-15. That is until the end where Blade (played by Wesley Snipes) has been drained of blood for a religious ritual. He is freed from his imprisonment by Karen (N'Bushe Wright), an ally. She tells Blade he has to drink her blood, Blade resist, and she tells him to just do it. What follows, with the villains ritual cut in between, is Karen and Blade wrapping their arms over each other, while Blade roughly drinks her blood. Karen peculiarly moans in a way that sounds like pleasure, telling him not to stop. The scene, as Zapp Brannigan* would say, “awoke feelings in me that are weird and deeply confusing to me”. Blood drinking in vampire movies have a long history of being a metaphor for sex, dating back to the original “Dracula” book, so in a way this scene isn’t all that different from other Vampire tropes. However there was something about this part that made teen me blush, feel uneasy but also continually thinking about this scenario later. In a way, what probably was exciting for baby me was the consensual TPE, RACK-ness coding of the scene: Karen offers her blood (risky submission) to Blade (a strong, dominant man), who resist first (a Dom-like “are you sure?”) to which Karen says “just do it” (enthusiastic consent). Karen’s moans also plays up the pleasure that power exchange can feel like for a submissive. On top of it, when Blade starts to drink too much, Karen tells him to stop and he does (how play partners keep each other safe). The fact that instead of them having sex, it was blood drinking, added a taboo, dangerous element to it. Now of course I am able to put words to baby me’s interest to this scene; naturally way back then it was a mystery to me why I loved this part so so much. One of my many kink awakenings. (Don’t worry past me, it’ll all make sense one day!) Also fuck “Morbius” for stealing this scene. Lol. 😜 * Futurama. Worth a google 😉 |
