Nuancing Pillion Beyond Abuse: Is Ray Misunderstood?
==SPOILERS AHEAD - YOU'VE BEEN WARNED==

Let's start with the technical stuff. The acting is stellar, the storytelling is fantastic, and I truly wish Harry Lighton all the best going forward because this was an amazing directorial debut.

The vision made real by the acting of Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård, and is very believable in how they embodied the fine details of their characters so well. Ray, ever brooding, is domineering but never lashes out at Colin. That is a fine detail to appreciate, as Ray is controlling, but not dangerous to Colin's safety. While his actions may be characterized as abusive by the larger consensus, it can be argued that in some gay subcultures, he acted in ways that are very normal to those subgroups: gay leather culture can be cold and transactional and that may be jarring for most. Intimacy and emotional connection are not necessary, but the argument is valid that lots of things were poorly communicated.

Colin is the true star of the movie though, given he has to carry the weight of bringing forward the story while Ray contents himself with the few lines he'll speak outside of brooding because he is an "alpha man". The movie entirely follows Colin's perspective. In that light, this ties back to my praises of the story: we only really know as much as Colin knows. This immersion never breaks, even if it would have brought some levels of satisfaction in understanding more.

I encountered an analysis that makes a lot of sense in bringing the ending together and supplement suspicions I had about the movie: Ray is a trainer type of dominant. His relationships are not meant to be dynamic because being the boyfriend type is not his style. Perhaps it would have been more gratifying to having a better closing off where he sends the key by mail, or we see Colin cut off the collar as a proper end to the dynamic. Sometimes, it really just doesn't happen like that and that's life. One thing is certain: Ray knew his work was done, and Colin was ultimately incompatible with him, but he'd land on his feet after the end of their relationship.

All in all, this movie undoubtedly a fantastic debut, it's an extremely high achievement for a newcomer. That, I think, is the most important point that has to come across. I will certainly be following what Lighton does next.
