Cockcages and penis nests
It is a neurodivergent joy when two special interests collide - on this occasion somewhat unexpectedly. I study the Early Modern European Witch Hunts as part of my work - and in my personal life, I have a deep love of caged cock. No other kind of cock will do in fact! The unexpected confluence of these two interests, comes in the cozy shape of the “penis nest.” You may have never heard of these - but let me know if you have, we probably have a special interest or two in common.
The Early Modern Witch Hunters were obsessed with sex, particularly women’s sexuality and women’s sexual power, which they sort to control and repress. Unfortunately, they were pretty successful at achieving this objective, and even today, the vast majority of heterosexual women, and many Queer women, are still deeply disempowered when it comes to sex, sexual desire and honouring their own agency.

It’s just the other side of Xmas, which various feminist writers have pointed out is the time of year when the Patriarchy re-asserts itself and doubles down on heteronormativity, reminding women that their place is squarely in the home - making food, cleaning up, managing relationships and doing all the emotional labour for the family - all whilst repressing their own emotions, needs and desires to make sure that “Christmas is perfect!”

If feminist writings are not your bag, there’s a plethora of Xmas movies to condition you into believing that this is right and normal, and the proper way to do things. Throw in a few fist fights to re-assert that masculinity should be emotionally illiterate and that men are incapable of emotional intimacy and managing their relationships by themselves.

Circling back to the penis nest, as my dinner is nearly ready… The Malleous Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches, in English) written by Heinrich Kramer in 1486 after his sexual overtures towards Helena Schueberin were roundly rejected, became the text that underpinned and legitimised the Early Modern European Witch Hunts. In this text, Heinrich discussed at length the phenomena of “penis nests” which were used by Witches to contain the penises that they stole, taking care of them and feeding them oats (honestly, I’m not joking!).

It is unclear why Heinrich felt Witches would want to steal penises and put them in a nest - it does remind me of those homophobic guys who think that all gay men want to fuck them (in your dreams mate!). Not only did Heinrich think that Witches (women of course) were stealing penises, he claimed that they left behind a non-functioning simulacrum of the man’s penis - on the man, exactly where his, er… real penis, should be. Modern writers generally suggest this whole concept is due to castration anxiety, I think it has a lot more to do with impotence and erectile dysfunction. Particularly since the penises move around as normal in the penis nests - which I’m inclined to think means up and down rather than wriggling around like worms!
I think the nest itself has a strong symbolism - a vulva of course is very like a nest, hairy and warm inside, fertile and producing young. I also believe that when you curse someone you create a bond with them that is not easily broken, so for Heinrich, the jilted lover, he wants to believe that this woman desires him, so much so that she wants to steal his penis and keep it for herself forever, lovingly tending it in her penis nest and feeding it oats.

As a lover of cockcages, I can relate to the desire to take ownership of a penis, take care of it and keep it all to myself! However, I would not dream of doing this with anyone I did not love and care about or want a deep connection with. I think that cockcages are a modern day version of penis nests, and any man is lucky to find a Witch who wants to take his penis and put it in one!
