SPELRUM is a mixed-media, short pop-up exhibition at House of Q in Stockholm, Sweden. Printed photography and digitally projected slideshows meet paintings and costume design. Alongside the artworks, it uses elements of theatrical set design, participatory workshops and artist Q&A sessions to welcome visitors into a magical space.

SPELRUM /ˈspeːlˌrɵm/
noun, neuter (ett spelrum; definite: spelrummet; plural: spelrum)
Etymology: Swedish, compounded from spel (“game, play, performance”) + rum (“room, space”).

A room or space set aside for playing; a play space.
(figurative) Room to manoeuvre; leeway, latitude, scope for action.
The freedom to move, experiment or choose within a set of limits.
(technical) Play, slack; the small margin of movement in a joint, rope or mechanism.

SPELRUM as an exhibition is an invitation into something private:two sadomasochistic erotic minds;two worlds of enactment and research;two artistic perspectives, and where they intersect.

Andy Buru and Marianne du bas Breteuil have for decades each explored their own forbidden rooms. What started as innocent but shameful teenage fever dreams grew into something both taboo and vulnerable, and therefore of utmost importance to keep hidden from prying eyes, so as not to hurt those they love or provoke those they fear. Slowly, over time, they transformed these forbidden spaces into magical play spaces. Where they could playfully invite others. Often with art and beauty as their most trusted pretence. Frames paradoxically allowing play room for what would be inconceivable outside. Seen as white, cultured, educated and successful, in other words privileged, they should know better than to get lost in these mazes of eros.

Born in Sweden but professionally nomadic, Andy Buru spent the past twenty-five years as an owned slave, a leather daddy, a hedonist, a purist, a magician, and a princess slut. As a young kinky boi, they spent the years of 2004 and 2005 roaming the backstreets of Kabukichō, Tokyo, and learning the ropes from people like Yukinaga Max, the little/young Yukimura. Later, they discovered the Berlin-based community of Schwelle7 and Xplore, where art and sexuality intersect—and where they still teach today.

In 2017, Andy made a smooth departure from the ordinary world, ditching a career as an organisational coach at a large international tech company to dedicate their life to teaching, writing, and embodying sadomasochism as a lived research practice. Nowadays, they spend six months of the year travelling and teaching, and the other six months studying subjects such as tea, flowers, and theatre, often in the misty mountains of Kumano, Japan.

In 2024, Andy released their book Rituals and Paradoxes: The Intimacy of Belonging in Sadomasochism and Esoteric Eroticism. Currently, they are plotting their first novel, which aims to explore themes not easily captured through philosophy or poetry.

A late bloomer, Marianne du bas Breteuil needed maturity, independence and resources for her fetishism to materialise. Since 2019, she has created dresses for events such as the Venice Carnevale, balls in Versailles, or more intimate outings with friends, principally within 18th-century costuming. The discovery of shibari through live sketching, after more than two decades of practice, opened the door to the BDSM community and a conscious expression of the underlying power dynamics and eroticism.

In this exhibition, Marianne du bas Breteuil gives access to her sadomasochistic perversions through her fluid style of painting and costume design.

Marianne grew up in France, where she learnt Old Master techniques at art centres, before leaving for Uppsala to study for a bachelor’s in history of art and a master’s in economics. She has previously exhibited in various galleries, most recently Hasselbacken and Mälsåker slott. She leads a hectic life in Stockholm and pursues a career outside art. She is currently focusing on developing her “barockokink” designs and collaborative performances.
