We will explore traditional semenawa through both practice and discussion, looking at its recognisable patterns, structural ideas, and the way this style approaches tension, intention, and connection. Rather than trying to define seme in one fixed way, we will approach it from different angles: technical, psychological, emotional, and relational. We will look at how these aspects come together in practice, and how seme can be felt not only through what is physically done, but also through timing, presence, attitude, and the relationship between rigger and model. A strong focus will be placed on the link between intention and effect: how small technical choices can change the feeling of a tie, and how seme often takes shape in the interaction between two people rather than belonging entirely to one role. The workshop is meant as an exploration of the style, not as a lesson in copying it. Through demonstrations, observation, discussion, and hands-on practice, participants will have the chance to experience different aspects of semenawa and reflect on what makes this approach distinctive. The aim is to understand the language, qualities, and sensibilities of traditional semenawa more deeply, and from there decide what feels meaningful, useful, or relevant to bring into one’s own practice. The TK We will analyze a stemless gote, looking at its structure, development, and the ideas behind its construction. We will also compare it with an original Japanese TK, highlighting the main technical and conceptual differences between the two approaches. The TK itself will not be formally taught as part of the workshop. Participants are therefore expected to already have a stable and reliable version of the gote, which they will be able to adapt to the different types of mechanical stress and loading explored during the class. Basic patterns Some iconic patterns will be taught and put in use. Both floorwork and suspensions can be part of the schedule. Each basic pattern will be used to teach a skill that can be carried over and used in several other ties. Variations Basic ties will be variated and transformed into new shapes. Variations are didactically skill-oriented, and participants will improve rope and body handling while experimenting with new ties.
