Slurs & Labels Pride House sal C3 You have probably noticed how the same word is given different meaning by different people. Meanings which may collide with each other, in ways which stigmatize innocent people. People who are prejudiced against LGBTQ+ minorities do not like to be called "bigots". Not even when they seek to outright persecure. Instead, they typically prefer to present themselves as heroic vigilantes who are taking a stance against something which sounds bad. And anything can be made to sound bad when you take a name for it and misuse it as a slur. Take for example the words “gay” and “fetish”. These are established terms for innocent sexual minorities. Being gay is either the same as being a homosexual man or the same as being an LGBTQ+ person, depending on whether you use a wide or narrow definition of the word gay. Being a fetishist is about attraction to certain objects or materials or such. Yet, there are some people who systematically misuse these words. Misusing the words“gay” as if it meant “ridiculous”, misusing the word “fetish” as if it meant “objectification” - treating human beings as if they were objects. When words for LGBTQ+ minorities are routinely used as slurs, and when these words which are already became slurs routinely gets used to depict LGBTQ+ minorities, it then becomes easier for people to accept bigotry and harder for them to talk and think about these minorities in meaningful and constructive ways. In this panel, we will talk about the use and misuse, and the history of words such as "gay", "fetish" and "pornography". What does the words originally mean? How have they evolved since, and in which ways - both good and bad - and how are they being used today? The discussion will include some examples from speakers own direct and indirect experiences – from mainstream society, from academia and from the LGBTQ+ subculture itself.
