A-Nicolas Ryu: Enzo, Flow and Dialogue Norrköping, Sweden 7.-8. November 2026 This weekend workshop explores rope as a living interaction between two bodies. Through movement, tension and attention, tying becomes a dialogue — a process where rigger and model continuously influence each other. The main structural theme of the workshop will be Enzo patterns. Inspired by the idea of the ensō circle, these patterns return to the body again and again, allowing the rope to move in circular, evolving pathways. Rather than focusing on memorising specific ties, we will use these patterns as tools for developing rhythm, direction and continuity in rope. A central aspect of the weekend will be flow in tying. We will explore how to move around the model’s body smoothly, how to connect transitions without unnecessary pauses, and how to maintain attention and connection throughout the tying process. The rope becomes a line of movement — guiding both bodies through space. We will work both on the floor and in partial suspensions. The floor provides a stable environment to understand the structure and direction of rope. From there we will gradually introduce partial suspensions, where balance, weight and rope tension become part of the dialogue between rigger and model. The material includes structured exercises for both riggers and models. Riggers will work on movement, rope handling, timing and spatial awareness around the body. Models will explore balance, weight transfer, breathing and active participation in the process. The aim is to develop a shared sensitivity where rope becomes a medium of communication. About Nicolas’ style Nicolas’ approach to rope focuses on movement, simplicity and somatic awareness. Instead of complex technical constructions, the emphasis lies on how rope travels around the body, how transitions unfold, and how two people can create a shared rhythm. His style is characterised by: • circular rope pathways and returning structures • smooth transitions and continuous movement • attention to body mechanics and balance • a strong focus on the interaction between rigger and model The goal is not to perform a perfect tie, but to cultivate a responsive and evolving tying process. More about the founder of the style: https://a-nicolas.art/ Level This workshop is intended for intermediate rope pairs who already have some experience working together. Participants should be comfortable with: • basic rope handling and tension control • common foundational ties (such as chest harnesses or hip harnesses) • working safely on the floor • basic knowledge of suspension safety Previous experience with suspension is helpful but full suspension is not required, as we will mainly explore partial suspensions. Participants should attend as a pair (rigger and model). What to bring • minimum 6 jute or hemp ropes (7–8 m) • comfortable clothing suitable for movement • safety cutting tool (recommended) • notebook if you like to take notes • water and snacks for the day Format The workshop will combine demonstrations, guided exercises and partner practice. Much of the time will be dedicated to repeating and exploring the principles in your own tying, allowing the material to settle naturally through experience. The aim of the weekend is not to collect a large number of new ties, but to develop sensitivity, flow and dialogue in rope. Teachers Joan von Brook is a presenter, performer, rope bottom, rigger and co-founder of Subspace studio in Prague. She has been a shibari addict since 2013. First as a rope-bottom, but almost immediately started also tying actively. As a rigger, she is mostly influenced by Soptik and Nicolas Arnoys. Her passion in teaching is creating hands-on fun multilevel exercises around the experience of models and riggers. Has various sports and dancing background, loves to look at body and mind as an inseparable unit. Her work is shaped by several styles, including Naka Ryu and Yukimura Ryu, which allow her to explore both technical precision and deep emotional intensity. She moves fluidly on both sides of the rope — as a rigger and as a model — bringing embodied understanding into every session. Her tying often combines emotional depth, dynamic movement, and elements of rough body play, with a strong focus on connection and presence.
