Welcome to a 2-day workshop with A-Nicolas from Brussels! Pathways in in rope is an invitation to explore the essence of rope—beyond technique, into movement, connection, and intention. Rather than follow a strict step-by-step plan, we’ll dive into principles and concepts that you can integrate into your own style of tying. We’ll use exercises to develop body awareness, connection with a partner, and the fluid transitions that turn technique into expression. Some ties may be complex, others deceptively simple—but all chosen to open space for play, intention, and reflection. My approach is always adaptive and responsive. I don’t teach formulas—I share tools, ideas, and observations you can make your own. Based on the group’s level, energy, and curiosity, I’ll build the workshop organically. If this workshop is held regularly in the same space, it will naturally evolve over time—each session building on what came before. That said, newcomers will always be welcome; we’ll find ways to integrate everyone into the flow without anyone feeling left behind. Some recurring themes: One Rope & Movement Starting with the basics: breath, balance, posture. Moving with and around your partner. Feeling the rope, the tension, the rhythm. Essential Flow Finding presence in simplicity. Tying as a conversation, not a performance. What does it mean to “flow” without losing clarity? Classic Forms Revisited Exploring traditional patterns like gote or strapado—not as ends, but as starting points. Where can we take them? What can we strip away? Minimalism & Depth Less rope, more intention. Focusing on what truly matters: sensation, connection, clarity. Bodywork & Posture Moving together with influence from dance, martial arts, massage. Tying with your whole body, not just your hands. Organic Tying Inspired by nature, imperfection, asymmetry. Shapes that grow instead of being built. Freeform Practice Letting go of structure. Exploring intuition. Using everything we’ve touched to create your own story in rope. While no two sessions are ever quite the same, this workshop is also a good doorway for those new to my approach. I’ve spent more than 20 years developing a personal style—one that sometimes drifts from what’s now seen as “traditional.” Expect a different perspective, maybe a few surprises, and hopefully something that resonates long after the ropes are packed away. Come with curiosity. Leave with tools, insights, and hopefully a few beautiful knots. Level needed : - Good communication level with your partner - Body awareness (and will to improve it) - Safe in suspension, meaning having done multiple successful suspensions, having good understanding of body mechanics in suspension and solid upline management for ring/carabiners. - The will to tie (and to be tied up) very differently if you have never studied with me. - Experimental and adventurous mind. Material needed - Minimum 8 ropes (Have a set that you are okay to sacrifice for some creation on the floor is a plus) - Blinfold, tenugui or strong pieces of tissue. - At least 4 carabiners. - Cutting tool. Price: 3300 DKK for one pair Tickets: https://www.redlily.dk/workshops-events/a-nicolas-pathways-in-rope A-Nicolas Since his twenties, A-Nicolas has immersed himself in the art of ropes, and since his thirties, in the art of photography. His work draws from Japanese kinbaku/shibari, blending influences from diverse body practices, including Aikido, Thai massage, Tango, Contact Improvisation, and System A. During four formative years in Japan, he trained under the esteemed master Arisue Go, focusing also on Aikido, Japanese culture, and kinbaku. Upon his return to Europe, he developed his unique tying style, Yoroi-ryu, under the name Nicolas Yoroï. As a key figure in European rope communities, A-Nicolas has collaborated and performed across Europe and North America, studying with renowned artists like Tessin Doyama, Kinoko, Ottonawa, Kazami Ranki, among others. Over the years, he has contributed through workshops, public events, performances, and the establishment of multiple dojos, most recently in Brussels. |
