In this weekend workshop, Laodai Davide will share his emotional style which is centered on deep connections between individuals. To him, finding happiness through connection is the main goal. The person in rope is the key, with untying serving as the climax and where each detail carries a meaning.

This workshop will be split into two parts. The focus of Day 1 will be emotions and personal connections, while Day 2 will focus on technical details.

DAY 1 - Saturday
On the first day, we will explore essential techniques, alongside key theories and concepts that go beyond the “how” to focus on the “why”. The goal is to guide students to deconstruct traditional rope styles and find your own personal approaches. You will learn to redesign and adapt elements to suit your individual needs and preferences. We will also explore the idea of “1 heart = 1 style”, recognising that similar hearts lead to similar styles. The goal is not for students to replicate exactly what is being demonstrated in class, but to inspire them to discover their own unique paths, taking into account how cultural contexts can shape the tying experience of people who live outside of Japan.

Throughout this workshop, Laodai Davide will share his guiding principles in tying.

• Safety - minimising risks
• Pleasure - mutual enjoyment
• Beauty

We will explore these ideas by way of minimalistic floor ties. The structure of Day 1 will be based on the “phases” of a tying session:

• Encounter
• Tying (technical focus: finger lock and its different application)
• Suspension: how to maintain connection and share the same journey (technical focus: redesigning suspension lines)
• Untying
• Aftercare
Bonus: different ways of tying hair

DAY 2 - Sunday
On the second day, we will shift the focus to suspension techniques. Topics covered include:

• Gote Shibari, discussing the difference between V shape vs T shape gote. (Students are welcome to tie other preferred body harnesses in this workshop)
• Basket tie
• Building structured ties for suspensions
• Suspension line management on bamboo
• Suspensions that will be covered on Day 2 include:
- Jellyfish
- Laodai flip
- Pin up rose

ABOUT LAODAI DAVIDE
The Emotional Side
Laodai Davide was very fortunate to meet Ayame as his first model in Shanghai. At the beginning, he had no knowledge of Kinbaku or any Japanese masters, aside from seeing some pictures of Kinoko's artistic works and a few images of Araki's photography. His initial goal was to learn techniques for artistic purposes, but he ended up discovering something much deeper and personally meaningful. Ayame, a former model for Yukimura Sensei in Japan, immediately captivated him with her energy and her rich Shibari heritage from the very start of his rope journey. Unfortunately, Davide never had the chance to meet Yukimura Sensei in person. However, he believes he was fortunate to learn his ideas about Shibari from the best teachers possible—his models. Throughout his rope journey, Davide also learned Yukimura-ryu techniques from Murasaki-san and integrated some elements from Yukimura Sensei into his own style.

He wants to be clear that he does not claim to be tying or teaching Yukimura-ryu. Over the years, Davide has developed his own approach.

The Technical Side
Davide considers himself an aesthete, so aesthetics hold significant importance for him. He is particularly passionate about techniques and has developed a clean, minimalistic approach to using ropes. Every element in his ties must serve a purpose, and he enjoys deconstructing classical ties to create new versions that align more closely with his vision of Shibari.

A common question Davide often encounters is, “Who is your teacher?” He has previously mentioned his teachers and inspirations for the emotional aspect of his work. Technically, he has learned from and been most influenced by Kinoko San, Yagami Ren San, and Jyubei Kamui San. As a result, many elements he uses and adapts come from the Akechi Denki - Miura Takumi lineage. Additionally, he draws daily inspiration from esteemed riggers from Japan and around the world.

Davide believes that the learning process never ends.
